Season 8 of The Walking Dead will be even more explosive than before, and that’s not an exaggeration — the cast all agree that this season is going to be about the action.
The Walking Dead season 8 is a harsh mistress. One minute it’s giving us a great new trailer to make us swell with pride as Rick and the survivors go up against Negan, and the next minute we’re being promised a few fatalities to knock Negan’s pair of home-run headaches from season 7 out of the park. Life’s just not fair.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Gimple said: ‘There are some big deaths this season. I think they will catch people by surprise.’
Surprising deaths, eh? Well, they’re hardly going to Negan off his lofty perch on day one, but don’t be shocked to see the likes of Carol, Eugene or, oh god, Daryl meet a grisly end at any point. If there was one thing The Walking Dead season 7 lacked – after the premiere, of course – it was a sense of real danger for the main players. Here’s hoping October 23 onwards brings that back in a big way.
Andrew Lincoln has also stated how the show has reclaimed some ‘swagger’ in season eight, saying: ‘I think that last season was very painful for everybody.
‘And now you get a certain sense of a reclaiming of the old show and the swagger.’
Despite the deaths that will probably ruin us for days, the cast offers assurances that the action will be worth it. “We’ve been knocked clear off our feet,” says Danai Gurira, who plays Michonne, Rick’s girlfriend. Austin Amelio, who plays Dwight, says “It’s a f —ing in-your-face action-packed IV of adrenaline. Season 7 was the ramp-up and now this is the blastoff. The stuff that’s happening is insane!” It sounds like the cast is just as excited for season 8 as the rest of us.
The Walking Dead returns to AMC on October 22.
